Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has a release date on Netflix. As part of the streamer’s 2023 showcase, Netflix revealed that Rebel Moon is set to be next year’s big Christmas release for the streamer. It’s been given a December 22nd release date, which suggests that the much-anticipated sci-fi epic will be a major tentpole for them. In fact, the December release date makes me wonder if the film is poised for some awards attention, particularly in the technical categories.

The release date makes sense, as sci-fi adventure is traditionally embraced over the holidays. For an example, one needs to look no further than the success of Avatar: The Way Of Water. The Star Wars sequel trilogy also did pretty well with December release dates (with Solo notably flopping during the summer). However, the film will have some competition for eyeballs, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel both releasing in the same time frame. It’ll be interesting to see how the sci-fi saga’s viewership numbers stack up against this year’s Glass Onion and The Grey Man, both of which were heavily hyped but didn’t beat a pair of releases from 2021Red Notice and Don’t Look Up.

We previously took a deep dive into Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon (read all about it here), but the story is said to be inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai, which was remade as The Magnificent Seven and inspired the sci-fi cult classic Battle Beyond the Stars. It’s supposed to be the first of a two-film saga revolving around a young woman (played by Sofia Boutella) who recruits warriors to help defend her home from an evil commander named Balisarius (got be played by Ed Skrein). Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll and Anthony Hopkins co-star.

Certainly, the Rebel Moon release date inspires confidence. Are you excited for Zack Snyder’s latest? Let us know in the comments!
