Alright, it seems that I’m writing an article bashing the premise of REAL STEEL every other day, so I’ll lay off for a change as it’s well documented that I think a movie about robot boxing is dumb. At this point I’m just going to wait for the reviews, and see if they can pull a rabbit out of a hat with a surprise hit.
And those behind the film are hoping for that as well, as director Shawn Levy is throwing out some ideas he has for a potential sequel, one that’s supposedly already starting to be drafted. Obviously that all depends on the box office (I’m not sure what sort of budget this film has), but here’s what he had to say to Bleeding Cool:
“Some of the notions we’re playing with… for instance we went very anthropomorphic in both the design and the movement of the robots in this movie, I think we can really blow that out. The class warfare between underworld and [World Robot Boxing], that’s something that seems rich. The evolution of this father and son’s relationship, and Hugh’s relationship with Evangeline…”
Wait, by “blow that out” does that mean he wants to ditch the anthropomorphism? And did I seriously spell anthropomorphism right on my first try? I would think that’s the case, and I’ve been saying all along if this was like Battlebots where the robots could be any shape or size and use real weapons instead of fists, that would be way cooler.
Think that REAL STEEL will warrant a sequel?
