Reacher trailer and first look images show Alan Ritchson in action

Amazon Prime Video’s Reacher trailer is here, and it may leave you with a few bruises by the time you’re done watching it. The new promo highlights Alan Ritchson (Titans) as the latest version of Jack Reacher, a 6’3″ ex-military police investigator who’s on the hunt for justice.

The Reacher trailer celebrates Ritchson’s uncanny resemblance to Lee Child’s original character from the book – a 6-foot-5, 240-pound, fist-first tough guy – basically the polar opposite of Tom Cruise’s version. The Reacher trailer also leaves a trail of bad guys bleeding on the ground after Jack goes ham on those standing in his way. Obviously, these people aren’t aware of his particular set of skills.

In addition to Ritchson, Malcolm Goodwin, Willa Fitzgerald, Chris Webster, Hugh Thompson, Maria Sten, Harvey Guillén, Kristin Kreuk, Currie Graham, Marc Bendavid, Willie C. Carpenter, Maxwell Jenkins, and Bruce McGill also star.

Lee Child’s Jack Reacher is about to be reborn when Alan Ritchson takes on the titular role for Amazon’s new series. Entertainment Weekly recently dropped a collection of Reacher first look images that have its lead character looking like he’s ready to conquer the world.

“Lee created a beloved character, and I thought trying to help make that character live on TV was a great challenge,” showrunner Nick Santora (Prison Break) tells EW. “I knew I’d always have Lee there to make sure everything about Reacher and the story was exactly how he wanted it. If Lee liked the product, we were doing it right.”

While Child was content with Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Jack Reacher in both the 2012 and 2016 films, he admits that the Mission: Impossible star doesn’t exactly fit his mental image of the character. “I really enjoyed working with Cruise,” Child told EW when it was announced that a new actor would be playing the character for Amazon’s new series. “He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun and he works really hard and he takes it really seriously. On your downtime, you do crazy things with him, but ultimately the readers are right: the size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is.”

During the search for a new Jack Reacher, Child was immediately taken with Ritchson’s audition. “This guy stepped on the screen and had this stillness and blend of menace and goodwill that is always confusing about Reacher,” Child said about Ritchson’s on-screen presence. “If he’s going to be your friend, you’re very lucky. If he’s not going to be your friend, you’re very unlucky. All of that had to be transmitted just through stance, mood, look — and Ritchson had it right away.”

The new Reacher first look images certainly have Ritchson looking as intimidating as the character is described across the 24-book series. To prepare for the role, Ritchson says he read every book in the collection and wound up becoming a superfan in the process. According to Ritchson, he was so enamored with the books that meeting Child left him feeling starstruck. Ritchson also admitted that the fight choreography required for the show was an undertaking.

“I felt intimidated learning the fight choreography,” he admits. “This fighting style, I was on my heels, wondering if I could pull it off. It’s so precise… We rebuilt me as a fighter. Some of the fights that we spent a month and a half learning are just three minutes on screen, but the fans deserve to see somebody move the way that a killing machine like him can.”

The new Amazon Prime Video series is set to make its streaming debut on February 4, 2022. The first season is based on the events of Child’s 1997 novel Killing Floor. Presented as an origin story for the Jack Reacher character, the story finds Jack accused of committing homicide and trying to prove his innocence. Before long, a conspiracy unfolds that will require Jack to use every trick in his arsenal to solve.
