Before we learn who will be competing for the best of the year when the Oscar nominations are announced next week, it's time for us to find out who will be competing for the worst of the year as the nominations for the 41st annual Razzie Awards have been announced.
2020 was an exceptionally bad year for the film industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic and if mediocre films thought they would be lost in the shuffle because we were dealing with a worldwide health crisis, they thought wrong! Leading the pact for worst of the year is Robert Downey Jr.'s Dolittle which nabbed six nominations, including worst film, worst remake, worst actor for Robert Downey Jr., worst director for Stephen Gaghan, worst screenplay, and worst screen combo for RDJ and "his utterly unconvincing "Welsh" accent."
Also honored with the distinction of six nominations is the Netflix Polish film 365 Days. While Netflix saw a lot of success with the film due to substantial viewership from those needing a little Fifty Shades of Grey fix, the erotic drama was nominated for worst film, worst actor for Michele Morrone, worst actress for Anna-Maria Sieklucka, worst director for Barbara Bialowas and Tomasz Mandes, worst screenplay, and worst remake/rip-off because the Razzies believe the Polish were trying to make their own version of Fifty Shades of Grey. Also, just to show what a whacky year 2020 was, 365 Days is a surprise contender because the Razzies tweaked their rules to account for films that didn't get a wide release in theaters.
Fantasy Island follows the duo of Dolittle and 365 Days with a total of five nominations including worst film, worst supporting actress for both Maggie Q and Lucy Hale, worst screenplay, and worst remake. Sia's directorial debut Music follows Fantasy Island with four nominations including worst film, worst director, worst actress for Kate Hudson, and worst supporting actress for Maddie Ziegler.
The Razzies wouldn't be complete without a mention of Adam Sandler and he's representing once again thanks to Hubie Halloween. Sandler scored a nomination for worst actor and worst screen combo which is a nomination he shares with "his grating simpleton voice." The film also landed a worst remake/rip-off nomination because of its similarities with Ernest Scared Stupid.
The Razzie Award winners (losers?) will be announced on April 24, 2021. Congratulations to all of this year's nominees and good luck on Razzie night. You can check out the full list of the nominees below!
