Disney's Dragon stays perched in first!
On its second weekend, Disney's animated adventure RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON was still flying high enough to take the top spot at the box office with an estimated $5.5 million.
The PG-rated fable set in an Asian-inspired fantasy realm dipped by 35% from its opening last weekend, bringing it to a ten-day domestic total of $15.8 million. The movie is also available (for an extra $30 for "Premier Access") through the Disney+ streaming service.
The Disney release, which features voice work from Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Benedict Wong and Daniel Dae Kim, has also collected a worldwide total of $52.6 million.
In second place was the animated/live-action hybrid TOM & JERRY with $4.1 million. After three weekends, the PG-rated clash of the classic Hanna/Barbera cartoon characters has a domestic total of $28.2 million and a worldwide total of $66.8 million.
The Warner Bros. release, directed by Tim Story (RIDE ALONG) and featuring humans Chloe Grace Moretz and Michael Pena, is also available on the HBO Max streaming platform through March 29.
The long-delayed Tom Holland/Daisy Ridley sci-fi thriller CHAOS WALKING was in third place with $2.25 million, stepping down by 40% from last weekend's opening.
Director Doug Liman's $100 million adaptation of the Patrick Ness young-adult books has a ten-day domestic total of $6.9 million. With an extra $2.6 million from international audiences, the Lionsgate release has a worldwide total of $9.5 million.
Still dribbling in fourth place was the R-rated basketball drama BOOGIE with $730,000 on its second weekend. Writer-director Eddie Huang's coming-of-age story has a ten-day domestic total of $2.27 million.
In fifth place was the animated DreamWorks sequel THE CROODS: A NEW AGE with $520,000. Now on its 16th weekend in theaters, the PG-rated Universal release has a domestic total of $54.3 million and $158.6 million worldwide, on a reported $65 million cost.
The Liam Neeson action-thriller THE MARKSMAN was in sixth place, followed in seventh place by the new Indian comedy-drama JATHI RATNALU with $460,000 on just 130 screens (a fraction of the other movies in the Top 10).
Tied for eighth place with an estimated $400,000 each was Warner Bros.' crime-thriller THE LITTLE THINGS and superhero sequel WONDER WOMAN 1984, which has been lasso-twirling on the big screen for three months now.
Entering the list at the bottom was the old-age drama THE FATHER with $312,000 for its first weekend on 865 screens. The PG-13 Sony release already received Golden Globe nominations for stars Olivia Colman and Sir Anthony Hopkins, along with nods for Best Picture and Screenplay.
In bigger box office news (or news about bigger box office), James Cameron's sci-fi opus AVATAR has reclaimed its status as the highest-grossing movie in history.
Cameron's technically groundbreaking 2009 movie had been dethroned from its lofty position in 2019, when Marvel's all-star superhero saga AVENGERS: ENDGAME surpassed the Pandora adventure by collecting a worldwide total of $2.79 billion.
But the filmmaker has restored his "King of the World" title thanks to the re-release of AVATAR in China this weekend, where it grabbed $21 million to push its cumulative global figure to $2.81 billion. (Cameron still holds the #3 spot with the $2.2 billion worldwide total of TITANIC.)
Cameron is still working toward a December 2022 release date for AVATAR 2 (the first of four planned sequels), and at least one part of the world seems to be greatly anticipating the next chapter of lanky blue aliens.
Next weekend delivers a not-so-mild-mannered Bob Odenkirk in the action-thriller NOBODY, followed on March 31 by the creature-feature GODZILLA VS. KONG (which stomps onto HBO Max the same day).
