You might have heard about a not-so-cheery Christmas film called RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE. You might have even heard about how great it held up at Toronto or the fact that MANY would suffer a lump of coal this Christmas than to miss out on this treat for the holidays.
Deadline has just passed word on Oscilloscope Laboratories shaking hands with the makers of RARE EXPORTS for a North American release! Usually this sort of stuff takes time before the releases go wide so when are expecting St. Nick to bombard our screens with all its Christmas darkness? How ’bout this holiday.
Oscilloscope Laboratories has just wrapped up North American rights to the Jalmari Helander-directed Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, following its Toronto International Film Festival. Pic is a dark re-imagining of the St. Nick myth. The film will be released this year, in time for the holidays, says Deadline.
RARE EXPORTS did incredibly well in Toronto and so it’s no surprise that we’ve got an epic sized holiday that not even the red giant could carry himself. So who do we have to thank for the big haul? Actors Tommi Korpela, Per Christian Ellefsen, Jorma Tommila alongside Director Jalmari Helander have brought us the film that was originally inspired by the short film RARE EXPORTS INC.
On Christmas Eve in Finland, Santa Claus is unearthed in an archaeological dig. This leads to the disappearance of the town’s children, and when a boy and his father come into possession of Santa, the father’s clan of hunters try to cash in by selling Santa back to the misguided leader of the corporation that sponsored the dig. It’s rough sledding from there.
We’ve got a nice heap of flicks to tantalize the senses until the Christmas holidays but it’ll definitely be a great thing to know that RARE EXPORTS is another thing to look forward to.
Unwrap this Christmas present. Drea de Matteo.
