Rambo: streaming prequel is the only future Stallone sees for the franchise

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Earlier this year, Sylvester Stallone said "Rambo could be back" if the most recent sequel RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (watch it HERE) did well enough on VOD. Based on a new comment on Stallone's Instagram, it sounds like we shouldn't expect to see a follow-up to LAST BLOOD – instead, Stallone is aiming to team with a streaming service for a prequel focused on a young Rambo.

When a fan asked Stallone, "What about a new Rambo?", Stallone replied:

Only as a streaming prequel or not at all.

Stallone was talking about a prequel while doing press for RAMBO: LAST BLOOD last year. Speaking with Screen Rant, he said,

I always thought of Rambo when he was 16 or 17 – I hope they can do the prequel – he was the best person you could find. He was the captain of the team; he was the most popular kid in school; super athlete. He was like Jim Thorpe, and the war is what changed him. If you saw him before, he was like the perfect guy."

That is a very different version of the character than we've ever seen Stallone play. While I would rather see Stallone continue in the role, it could be interesting to see the character he describes get broken down into the Rambo we're familiar with.

Stallone also told our own JimmyO about an idea he had for a LAST BLOOD sequel, in which

the only place (Rambo) could actually go where he could survive would be an Indian reservation. That's the only place, because (the police) can't come on, it's Federal. That's the only place he could go and heal, other than that he's done."

It seems he has since taken that idea off the table.
