Ralph Macchio pays tribute to Pat Morita

As Mr. Miyagi once said, “No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher. Teacher say, student do.” Well, it seems both Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio were good teachers and students. Macchio is now paying respect to the late Morita, penning an essay in tribute to his late sensei.

As part of People’s “What I Wish I Could Tell You” series, Ralph Macchio authored a rather touching piece in tribute to Pat Morita, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 73. “The legacy of your work and contribution to the world in your portrayal of Mr. Miyagi shines brighter than ever.”

Ralph Macchio also noted how Daniel LaRusso on Cobra Kai is directly tied to that of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movies. “I have this wonderful opportunity to walk in your sensei shoes as I impart the wisdom and experiences of our days together. The spirit of Miyagi is felt throughout this show.”

Macchio concluded his piece in a most heartfelt manner. “Thank you for the gift of our friendship, for blessing us with your brilliant portrayal of the iconic Mr. Miyagi and, mostly, for your ongoing presence in my life.” As the great Mr. Miyagi said, “If come from inside you, always right one.”

Ralph Macchio recently wrote the book “Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me,” which came out in October. Season five of Netflix’s Cobra Kai was released in September, earning rave reviews all around.

While Pat Morijta could obviously never be physically part of Cobra Kai, Mr. Miyagi has been referenced many times, with the character being featured through archival footage and proving a major influence on Daniel.
