Every director has film skeletons in their closet. Even the most celebrated directors have movies they aren't proud of or wish they could forget. Whether it's Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS, Stephen Spielberg's 1941, or Steven Soderbergh's KAFKA, everyone makes mistakes. When Guy Ritchie made the 2002 flop SWEPT AWAY (a film that was nominated for a Golden Raspberry for worst screenplay) I didn't give it much concern. A talented director like Ritchie was sure to rebound and that's exactly what he did with hits like SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., and this year's billion dollar bonanza ALADDIN.
However, it's been over ten years since Ritchie's 2008 film ROCKnROLLA, a film that exemplifies the director's affinity for gritty crime and sardonic humor. That's why I was thrilled to discover that Ritchie was returning to that world with his upcoming film THE GENTLEMEN. With the picture just over a month out, Miramax just dropped a brand new trailer for the Matthew McConaughey led vehicle and dear Lord is it awesome! This trailer is just dripping with Ritchie's signature style: the humor, the violence, the charismatic characters – they are all there.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, THE GENTLEMEN, follows American expat Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him. With this cast, this director, and this story, I'm sufficiently stoked.
So what did you guys think of the trailer? Did it peak your interest? Are you a fan of Guy Ritchie? Sound off in the comments below!
