Rachel McAdams explains her absence from the Mean Girls reunion commercial

While the Plastics met back up for a Wal-Mart ad for Black Friday, their Queen Bee didn’t get the memo and Regina George herself explains why.

The girls of the pop culture phenomenon Mean Girls returned recently in two different forms. Firstly, a trailer was released for a new film that is based on the musical adaptation of Tina Fey’s 2004 original. The newest incarnation features Angourie Rice as Cady Heron and Reneé Rapp as Regina George. Fey returns along with fellow SNL alum Tim Meadows in their respective roles from the original. Additionally, last month’s advertisement for Wal-Mart’s Black Friday sale featured a reunion of the cast in a sort of continuation of their characters’ lives. Lindsay Lohan returned along with Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert in their famous Plastics roles. However, Regina George was notably absent.

The commercial showcased the cast members still involved together with their own high school students as Cady is now the guidance counselor. There is even a re-enactment of the Winter Talent Show sequence. According to Variety, McAdams has finally revealed why she turned down the opportunity to appear in the extended ad. McAdams explained, “I don’t know; I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest. A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag. Also…I didn’t know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later.”

While next year’s Mean Girls only features Tina Fey and Tim Meadows as the remaining connection to the original movie, it is revealed that there was almost an opportunity for McAdams to make a cameo in the movie musical. McAdams would expound, “Tina and I sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end. I was really down for whatever she wanted to do. I think the direction it went in will be fantastic and I cannot wait to see it.” While there was a cash grab name-only Mean Girls 2 TV movie in 2011, none of the significant creatives were involved. However, McAdams claiming she would be open to a true film reunion of the cast, perhaps there is still an opportunity for a real Mean Girls follow-up.
