R.L. Stine: scariest book ever is Stephen King’s Pet Sematary

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Growing up I was a big fan of kid-horror author R.L. Stine. Like many of you out there, my horror reading timeline goes like this: I started on Stine's GOOSEBUMPS, before moving onto Stine's FEAR STREET series, and finally graduating to the works of Mr. Stephen King.

One seems to flow right into the next in the typical development of a horror reader. And that should come as no surprise as Stine was recently interviewed by EW and let drop the bombshell that not only does he consider King's PET SEMATARY the scariest book of all-time (good call) but that he has stolen the novel's plot at least 5 times.

R.L. Stine on the scariest book he's ever read:

Pet Sematary by Stephen King is the all-time creepiest. I’ve stolen that plot about five times — I had to!

Nice.

Now I'm left wondering exactly which book (Goosebumps and/or Fear Street) he "stole" the plot of PET SEMATARY for… Nothing is popping into my head, but if you can think of what they might be let us know!

PET SEMATARY synopsis:

Doctor Louis Creed moves his family to Maine, where he meets a friendly local named Jud Crandall . After the Creeds' cat is accidentally killed, Crandall advises Louis to bury it in the ground near the old pet cemetery. The cat returns to life, its personality changed for the worse. When Louis' son, Gage, dies tragically, Louis decides to bury the boy's body in the same ground despite the warnings of Crandall and Louis' visions of a deceased patient.
