We have some very sad, tragic news to share today, as Deadline picked up a report from the news agency AFP that actor Gaspard Ulliel has passed away following a skiing accident in the French Alps yesterday. Here’s the information:
The Cesar-winning actor was hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a head injury and did not recover, the actor’s family and local agent have said. The 37-year-old actor was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Grenoble following a collision on the slopes in the Savoie region.
Mountain police have been responding to multiple accidents in the region due to hard snow and ice on the slopes.
Born on November 25, 1984, Ulliel broke into acting at a young age, with his first screen acting role coming in an episode of the TV show Mission protection rapprochée in 1997. Over the last twenty-five years, he added fifty more films and TV shows to his résumé, including Brotherhood of the Wolf, A Very Long Engagement, The Last Day, Paris, je t’aime, It’s Only the End of the World, Eva, and Twice Upon a Time. He played Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 biopic Saint Laurent, and made his English-language debut by taking over the role of Hannibal Lecter from Anthony Hopkins in the 2007 film Hannibal Rising.
Last July, we heard that Ulliel had been cast as the villainous character Anton Mogart, a.k.a. Midnight Man, in the upcoming Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight. The trailer for that show was released on Monday night, announcing that Moon Knight will be making its premiere on Disney+ on March 30th. Sadly, Ulliel’s role on the show has turned out to be one of his last.
Making the loss of Ulliel at such a young age all the more tragic is the fact that he leaves behind the young son he had with French model / singer Gaëlle Piétri. Our since condolences go out to Ulliel’s family, friends, and fans. He was taken way too soon.
