Quentin Tarantino on the possibility of Star Trek being his final movie

Star Trek, Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino has long said that he will be ending his feature-film career after his tenth and final movie. "I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road," the director recently said. "I see myself writing books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative. I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies." It remains to be seen what Tarantino's final project will be following the release of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, but one possibility is that R-rated Star Trek project which has been kicking around.

Quentin Tarantino came up with the story for the film with Mark L. Smith (THE REVENANT) penning the screenplay, and he'll be weighing in on the project once his latest film hits theaters. As far as Tarantino directing the film himself, I'm not about to hold my breath, but the director doesn't seem as though he's ruling out the possibility just yet. While speaking with CinemaBlend, Tarantino mentioned a possible loophole which could allow him have his cake and eat it too.

I guess I do have a loophole, [if] the idea was to throw a loophole into it. Which would be [to go], ‘Uhhh, I guess Star Trek doesn't count. I can do Star Trek … but naturally I would end on an original.’ But the idea of doing 10 isn't to come up with a loophole. I actually think, if I was going to do Star Trek, I should commit to it. It's my last movie. There should be nothing left handed about it. I don't know if I'm going to do that, but that might happen.

Although Quentin Tarantino has prided himself on writing original movies, he also doesn't see anything wrong with his final film perhaps serving as a glimpse into an alternate career path. "There also is another thought process going on where it's like, yes, [my last movie] could be original. On the other hand, maybe that could show a different career I could've had," Tarantino said. "Whereas maybe [Once Upon a Time in Hollywood] is my last original — I'm not saying this is the case — but maybe this is my last original, and Star Trek or any other thing, a book or something like this, is the career I could have had if I wasn't just writing everything all the time. Writing always originals. Maybe I could have had a different career if I looked for other people's scripts, or if I wanted to find a book to be inspired by, and do an adaptation of. That would've been a different career. And maybe that could be fun to explore on the 10th [movie]." Again, I'm not about to hold my breath, but I must admit that the thought of Tarantino helming Star Trek is rather interesting. Meanwhile, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD will hit theaters on July 26th.
