Quentin Tarantino finds his Charles Manson for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

When you see the pictures Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie looking especially groovy on the set of Quentin Tarantino’s new movie it’s easy to forget it was once being touted as his “Charles Manson movie.” Even though the movie is not about Manson he is still a notable figure in the movie, and Tarantino has finally found the actor to bring the infamous wacko to the big screen in JUSTIFIED actor Damon Herriman.

The Wrap confirmed Herriman (below) will play the leader of the Manson Family, members of which went on to murder actress Sharon Tate (Robbie) and her friends in her home in 1969. The murders will play a central role in the film, the main story of which centers on DiCaprio and Pitt’s characters, an actor and his stunt double, who are trying to adjust to a changing Hollywood.

What's hilarious is that Collider has learned that not only has Herriman been cast as Manson in HOLLYWOOD, but before that, he was also cast as Manson in the upcoming second season of MINDHUNTER on Netflix. The new season is set to take place in the '80s, years after Manson was imprisoned, and word is Herriman shot his scenes back in July, so his work there will be a nice little companion piece to the movie. Clearly, he rocks it as Manson if he impressed both the likes of Tarantino and David Fincher (who executive produces MINDHUNTER).

Other casting news in The Wrap’s report included Rumer Willis joining the movie, playing British actress Joanna Pettet. Also joining are Dreama Walker as actress Connie Stevens; Margaret Qualley as a fictional character named Kitty Kat; Costa Ronin plays Polish actor Voytek Frykowski, who was killed in Tate’s home; Victoria Pedretti plays Lulu and; Madisen Beaty is Kate.

EW also shed some light on the casting of GIRLS star Lena Dunham, who will be playing Catherine “Gypsy” Share, a member of the Manson community. Then there’s Maya Hawke – the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke – who is playing a character named Flower Child.

Whew, that’s a lot of casting news, but Tarantino's movies always have terrific casts so I’m sure everyone will do great. The role of Manson is a big one, so congrats to Herriman on nabbing the role. This is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated movies of 2019. And we will be getting a taste of Herriman's work before we see the movie, so that's even more reason to get excited about the second season.
