Quantum Leap: reboot gets a fall 2022 launch date

One moment that scarred me for life as a kid was the series finale of Quantum Leap. An avid watcher of the show, I fully expected Scott Bakula’s Dr. Sam Beckett to leap home in the finale, but it was not to be. The show ended with Beckett continuing his leaps through time, with it noted in an on-screen epilogue that he never returned home. It was a major bummer, and recess at school the next day was pretty grim, as all of us fifth graders loved the show so much. But, with the Quantum Leap reboot a go at NBC, could we eventually see the return of our beloved Sam Beckett?

To be fair, NBC’s Quantum Leap reboot, which Deadline reveals will premiere on Monday, September 9th will likely be its own thing…for now. But, in this era of legacy sequels, I think the network would be foolish not to have an endgame in mind where Bakula returns (sadly, the beloved Dean Stockwell passed away last November at 85). The show’s synopsis clarifies that this is a continuation of the series, not a full-fledged re-imagining.

Here is how NBC describes it:

It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.

Raymond Lee, who’s being hyped up as the next big TV star, will play the lead. The great Ernie Hudson co-stars with Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee. The show’s original creator, Don Bellisario, returns as a producer alongside Martin Gero & Deborah Pratt.
