Producer Charles Roven on why Wonder Woman 1984’s release was pushed back

We're still well over a year away from the release of WONDER WOMAN 1984, but at one point, we could have been much closer to witnessing Wonder Woman's (Gal Gadot) next adventure. Originally, the Patty Jenkins film was set for a December 13, 2019 release before being moved up to November 1, 2019, but last October, Warner Bros. pushed the film all the way back to June 5, 2020.

While speaking with Collider, WONDER WOMAN 1984 producer Charles Roven spoke about why the release date was changed, and it turns out that the new release date is the one they wanted from the very beginning.

We always wanted the date that we are on right now. The studio felt that until their slate for the year before came together—and they had an amazing end of 2018—that they needed to have a big what I call aircraft carrier, a "tentpole", in [2019]. We had a very rushed pre-production because Patty also did the TNT show and we had a very rushed post-production schedule in order to make the date that we were on, which was November 1, 2019. We were doing it because the studio said they really needed it, and then at a certain point they came to us and they said, "You know what, you guys are right. Let’s go back to the month that you guys released Wonder Woman 1 in, and take the extra time."

Given how successful WONDER WOMAN was for Warner Bros., I would have hated to have seen the studio rush the film, so I'm glad that they came to their senses eventually. Even without WONDER WOMAN 1984, Warner Bros. still has plenty of other notable tentpole pictures coming out this year, including SHAZAM! on April 5th, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS on May 31st,  IT: CHAPTER 2 on September 6th, and JOKER on October 5th. No need for the WONDER WOMAN sequel, especially if it gives them more time to get it right. Speaking of sequel, Charles Roven also recently claimed that Patty Jenkins isn't looking at this new film as a sequel, but more as the next iteration of Wonder Woman. "She’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash–Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years," Roven said. "But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling. Even though it’ll have a lot of the same emotional things, a lot of humor, a lot of brave action. Tugs at the heart strings as well." Yea, it's a sequel, and it will hit theaters on June 5, 2020.
