Pride and Prejudice and Zombies images feature corsets and bloodshed

A cinematic adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s book PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, which had the oddball concept of adding zombies and ninjas into the prose of Jane Austen’s public domain 1813 novel PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, has been in development since early 2009, and over the years the project has passed through the hands of several directors.

The last filmmaker to get a grasp on it is Burr Steers, director of such films as IGBY GOES DOWN and 17 AGAIN, although he’s best known to me for his acting roles in PULP FICTION and Scott Spiegel’s INTRUDER. Steers has guided PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES through filming and toward a February 5, 2016 release date.

To prove that the movie has actually finally happened, here we have a handful of fresh images from the production. Some of these images are the kind you’d expect to see from any adaptation of Austen’s source material, and then you get to the weaponry and the throat ripping.

I’ve never read the ZOMBIE version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (or the zombie-free edition for that matter), but I’m intrigued. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE adaptations have been done to death, so mixing in the undead might be just what the property needs to feel fresh again.

The film stars Lily James, Sam Riley, Matt Smith, Jack Huston, Lena Headey, and Charles Dance. If it does well, perhaps we’ll see an adaptation of the Ben H. Winters/Jane Austen mashup novel SENSE AND SENSIBILITY AND SEA MONSTERS.
