With the recent NSA “spying” craze going on, it was inevitable that Hollywood would catch on and make something of it. Fortunately, it’s a tongue-in-cheek TV spot for RED 2 rather than a full blown movie adaptation. In the latest spot for the sequel which stars Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Byung-hun Lee, and Neal McDonough, the President of the United States addresses the covert operations of the nation’s finest operatives (i.e. the “reds”) over footage of them doing what they do best. And worst.
Take a look:
Here’s the synopsis:
In RED 2, the high-octane action-comedy sequel to the worldwide sleeper hit, retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the next-generation weapon. The mission takes Frank and his motley crew to Paris, London and Moscow. Outgunned and outmanned, they have only their cunning wits, their old-school skills, and each other to rely on as they try to save the world-and stay alive in the process.
RED 2 looks like some good junkfood for the brain and not much more. That’s not a bad thing, either, as the original was the same thing. It’s not going to change your life or become a classic slice of cinema gold, but it’ll likely be fun and a good escape from the raucous slate of summer flicks already in the pipe. Or it could fail miserably. Either way, I doubt the NSA will be paying much attention.
RED 2 starts spying on theaters on July 19, 2013.
