Fans of THE BOONDOCK SAINTS can stop waiting for a third film in the series as writer-director Troy Duffy will instead be bringing you a television series featuring the MacManus brothers. Duffy will team with IM Global on a prequel series which he will write. The news comes during the current hot streak for feature films being adapted for the small screen.
There is currently no network attached to THE BOONDOCK SAINTS series nor is there any word as to whether Sean Patrick Flanery or Norman Reedus will be involved. Duffy had this to say about the series.
“For years I’ve been obsessed with telling a real origin story with Boondock, and IM Global TV has stepped up,” Duffy said. “Television is the perfect medium to explore these controversial characters on a much deeper level and to bring Boondock Saints to a whole new audience.”
THE BOONDOCK SAINTS was a massive word of mouth hit when it debuted in 2000. It was followed by a sequel in 2009 while talk of a third film has been rumored since then. Duffy’s rise to fame and subsequent fall was made into the documentary OVERNIGHT. Personally, I have always found THE BOONDOCK SAINTS to be incredibly overrated. The only saving grace for the first film was the chemistry between Reedus and Flanery along with the involvement from Billy Connolly and Willem Dafoe. How a series will work would hinge on the involvement from those four as a recasting of the characters would feel a lot like THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED, which is to say not good.
There is no expected premiere date at this time for THE BOONDOCK SAINTS but stay tuned as this develops.
