Star Wars: Shawn Levy is now in talks to direct a new film in the franchise after Deadpool 3 and finishing up Stranger Things

Deadpool 3 is pretty eagerly anticipated, with the double whammy of an introduction of the edgy character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the big news of Hugh Jackman returning to the Wolverine role one last time for a fun rivalry with Wade Wilson. Of course, the director of that film, Shawn Levy, has already been made a name for himself with his direction on Stranger Things and his previous work with Ryan Reynolds on Free Guy and The Adam Project.

It looks like the director is working his way up the franchise ladder at Disney, as it’s now been reported by Deadline that he is in talks to direct a Star Wars film. He is currently in post-production for a Netflix limited series, All The Light You Cannot See, which he directed. After his schedule opens up with the conclusion of Stranger Things and Deadpool 3, the plan is to have Levy continue his relationship with the studio on a Star Wars project. In addition, Levy is also in discussion to follow up another one of his Ryan Reynolds projects with a sequel to Free Guy 2.

As of now, the only details available are his scheduling of the projects. There is yet to be any word on the writers, cast, or what the story elements include. This comes after news of Rian Johnson giving updates on his once-planned original trilogy, as well as Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Watiti directing a standalone Star Wars film, and finally, the revelation of Lost‘s Damon Lindelof writing a Star Wars movie with Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing.

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has said she has been hesitant to greenlight projects ever since the Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron movie fell through as well as problems on productions like Solo: A Star Wars Story. The last feature film to be released in theaters was the conclusion of the sequel saga, The Rise of Skywalker, in 2019. Since then, the franchise has been releasing a slew of shows on Disney+ including The Mandolorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor.
