I don’t know what’s going on here. I just went from talking about the end of TWILIGHT to another movie that revolves around vampires and the teens that love them.
I’m going to be fair with this one since I’ve never read VAMPIRE ACADEMY, nor did I know of its existence until now. As someone nearing their thirties, I don’t know what the teens are into anymore aside from crawling into ball pits at Wal-Mart and twerking. What is twerking?! Ugh, I’m tragically unhip. So forgive me if I don’t get the “awesomeness” of bringing this material to the big screen.
To its credit, VAMPIRE ACADEMY: BLOOD SISTERS doesn’t have any sparkly vamps and has a good deal of action but THE LOST BOYS and NEAR DARK, it’s not. It was adapted by Daniel Waters (HEATHERS, BATMAN RETURNS). Also I’m not familiar with any of the teen stars though I did find three actors I am familiar with: Olga Kurylenko, Joely Richardson, and Gabriel Byrne. The series from Richelle Mead does have romance, depression, sibling rivarly, and all the other stuff that might not appeal to you when it comes to a vampire flick. That said, I am not part of the target audience but there might be someone here who has enjoyed the books.
Synopsis: Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.
VAMPIRE ACADEMY directed by Mark Waters (MEAN GIRLS) hits theaters on February 14, 2014.
