Break out the pods because it seems as though there's yet another remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS on the way. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is developing what will be the fifth feature-film adaptation of Jack Finney's "The Body Snatchers". The novel takes place in a small town which has been invaded by alien pods which have drifted to Earth from space. One by one, the pods replace the sleeping people of the town with perfect physical duplicates, while the original humans turn to dust. Devoid of human emotion, the alien duplicates soon begin to multiply and take over.
Jack Finney's novel was quickly adapted into INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS in 1956 and starred Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter. Another remake, perhaps the most well known adaptation of Finney's story, followed in 1978 and starred Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy. A third, BODY SNATCHERS, was released in 1993 starring Gabrielle Anwar, Terry Kinney, and Billy Wirth. The final adaptation, or so we thought, was released just ten years ago and was titled THE INVASION. Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig starred in that critically panned remake. After all that, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that another remake is in the works, but is there really anything fresh to say about the story? I suppose we'll find out. It's still early days on the project, but Deadline adds that the script is being written by David Leslie Johnson (THE CONJURING 2).
