I can't imagine that it will come as a surprise, but Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. is now officially developing a sequel to AQUAMAN. The film has been in theaters for a little over a month at this point, and has already become the highest grossing film in the DC Universe, as well as the first DC film to cross the $1 billion mark. Even before the film was released, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said that he had "enough confidence to begin talks on a sequel," which now seems to be moving forward.
Naturally, Warner Bros. is keen for director James Wan to return for the AQUAMAN sequel, but much like what it took to get Patty Jenkins onboard for WONDER WOMAN 1984, Deadline guesses that the studio will need a "whale-sized deal" in order to lock Wan down. According to James Wan's spokesman, the director will be taking a much-needed break at the moment. In addition, he's also not in a hurry to rush the sequel, as studio sources have said that a deal won't happen until Wan signs off on the script. Like most comic-book movies, AQUAMAN planted the seeds for a sequel, particularly in its mid-credit sequence, and one person who already have ideas for the sequel is Aquaman himself – Jason Momoa. The actor told Total Film in December that he had already pitched his own ideas for the sequel to producer Peter Safran and Toby Emmerich. "I definitely have an opinion. Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich," Momoa said. "They loved it. It’s awesome…But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2."
