Poster Round-up: Broken City, Not Fade Away, Holy Motors, Flight, Great Expectations

So many posters and trailers these days and so little time to show them all to you. But, here is a look at six posters for five new movies.

First up is BROKEN CITY starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe. While the poster looks kind of generic, the movie has a potentially intriguing plot. The film follows Billy Taggart (Wahlberg), a former cop living in New York who enters the private detective racket when he is hired by the city’s corrupt mayor (Crowe) to spy on the mayor’s wife (Zeta-Jones), as he is afraid that he’s cheating on him. Taggart is able to confirm the suspicions when he discovers the mayor’s wife has been having an affair, but the situation is heightened when he discovers that the the man she’s been sleeping with has been murdered.

Crowe and Wahlberg seem like they would make an interesting tandem, but this has the potential to be a bust. Here’s hoping 50 Cent isn’t in it. That guy tends to fall into flicks with posters like this.

BROKEN CITY also stars Natalie Martinez, Jeffrey Wright, Kyle Chandler, and Barry Pepper and hits theaters on January 18th.

Next is FLIGHT from director Robert Zemeckis starring Denzel Washington, John Goodman, Don Cheadle, and Melissa Leo. From the first trailer I got both a dark comedy and serious drama vibe, but I could not help feeling there was some kind of twist coming. Each time I see the trailer, I am more and more intrigued by it.

Plot: An airline pilot saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something more troubling about the pilot’s exact condition during the flight.

The new posters, one domestic and the other international, put the focus on Denzel’s recognizable mug. Here’s hoping the movie is as good as the trailer has made it out to be. FLIGHT opens on November 2nd.

HOLY MOTORS is a movie we have not really covered on this site, but I saw the trailer for it and it completely suckered me in. It is incredibly bizarre and I have no idea what it really is about, but it looks unique which is enough to get my money.

Plot: From dawn to dusk, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar, a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man…

Director Leos Carax is a French icon of cinema. His closest equivalent would be David Lynch. This is his first movie in four years. He also directed THE LOVERS ON THE BRIDGE and POLA X, two excellent movies. HOLY MOTORS costars Eva Mendes which is, again, enough to entice me into watching it.

HOLY MOTORS is premiering at film festivals over the last few weeks. No word on a limited theatrical release.

Next up is the poster for David Chase’s coming of age drama NOT FADE AWAY. THE SOPRANOS creator takes a nostalgic look at three best friends growing up in the New Jersey suburbs who decide to start a rock band after catching the Rolling Stones on television in 1964. The poster is nice and retro and give me hope this small movie may be another ALMOST FAMOUS.

Starring Brad Garrett, Bella Heathcote, Christopher McDonald, Molly Price, Lisa Lampanelli, John Magaro, Jack Huston, and Will Brill, NOT FADE AWAY will be have a limited theatrical release on December 21st.

Lastly, we have the lavish new version of Charles Dickens’ GREAT EXPECTATIONS. Mike Newell gathered many HARRY POTTER alumni for this retelling of the classic rags to riches story. It has recently been getting positive reviews in the UK yet sadly still has no US distribution. Here’s to hoping we get to see it someday soon.
