Fairy tales are an easy thing for Hollywood to adapt, since you don't actually need to pay licensing fees for IPs or anything. Which is why there was that whole fad of "gritty fairy tales", like SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and RED RIDING HOOD and such. Now, it seems, that fad has died out. But there's a subversive take on the way about the Fairy Godmother called…FAIRY GODMOTHER. Here's the synopsis:
When sought-after Fairy Godmother Faye is hired by a mind-bogglingly gorgeous teenage client, Kenzie, to find her true love with the hottest prince in the land, Faye finds herself facing an unfamiliar challenge when the prince starts falling for her instead.
The film will be directed by Carrie Brownstein, the co-creator, co-star, and co-writer of PORTLANDIA (among other things, like Hulu's CASUAL and Amazon's TRANSPARENT).
You know, I think this could be fun. I mean, I did enjoy ENCHANTED and the first two SHREK movies, so if it has that kind of satirical edge to it, it could work. I've also seen PORTLANDIA, and while it wasn't always to my taste, it definitely showed that Brownstein had a unique comedic voice, that could work great with a sarcastic, subversive take on a well-worn fairy tale cliche.
No official release date as of yet, but expect that to change soon.
