Fox Searchlight recently announced that the “female Frankenstein” story Poor Things, which stars Emma Stone (Cruella), will be receiving a theatrical release on September 8th. Now they have unveiled a teaser trailer for the film, and you can check it out in the embed above!
Stone earned an Oscar nomination for her role in director Yorgos Lanthimos’s film The Favourite, and Poor Things brings them back together. Lanthimos has directed the film from a screenplay by Tony McNamara, based on a novel by Alasdair Gray (pick up a copy HERE). Stone is joined in the cast by Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers), Ramy Youssef (Ramy), Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show), and Christopher Abbott (Possessor).
When we first heard about Poor Things, all we knew about the story was that it was called a “female Frankenstein” story because after drowning herself to escape her abusive husband, Bella’s brain is replaced by that of her unborn child. We learned more by looking up the description of Gray’s novel, and that description goes along with the full synopsis the film has now. Reviews from readers have indicated that the novel is incredibly weird, and judging by the teaser trailer that certainly appears to be an element that Lanthimos has successfully translated to the screen. But that can be expected from him. In addition to The Favourite, Lanthimos’ directing credits include Dogtooth, Alps, The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
Stone and Lanthimos produced Poor Things with Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.
What did you think of the Poor Things teaser trailer? Does this look like a movie you’ll want to see in September? Does the visual style draw you in – or does the strangeness put you off? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
I can’t say I’m hyped for Poor Things, but it’s definitely a movie I intend to check out at some point. The visuals look very interesting, but this is also the kind of thing I might get tired of watching very quickly. So it’s a “wait and see” that I’ll give a chance.
