Point Break 2 script focuses on the fate of Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Utah

1991 gave us a spoil of great movies, including The Fisher King, Boyz n the Hood, Barton Fink, and, of course, Katherine Bigelow’s Point Break. Celebrated by many as one of the greatest action movies of all time, Point Break was a critical and commercial success at the box office with $83.5M in global ticket sales. With Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze taking point, the film follows an undercover agent (Reeves) who infiltrates a gang of bank-robbing surfers. For a time, there was talk of there being a sequel called Point Break: Indo. Unfortunately, this project never got on the board, and fans were left to wonder if we’d ever see an honest-to-goodness Point Break sequel.

As it turns out, Point Break writer Peter W. Iliff recently appeared on the latest episode of the Script Apart podcast and revealed that he’s written a Point Break 2 script that focuses on the fate of Reeves’ character, Johnny Utah.

During the interview, Iliff revealed that he’s written a script for a Point Break TV show that revolves around Utah’s daughter. According to Iliff, she’s an Olympic snowboarder who blows out her knee, which leads her down a path of extremes involving fast cars, painkillers, and addiction. Years later, she’s sober and joins the FBI.

“Johnny Utah has been missing. His body’s not been found. He’s [been reported] dead for years. There’s a mystery around where he is, and you’re going to find out – he’s not dead. There’s a bigger story that evolves around that, while she gets involved in this eco-terrorist movement, which of course is now a big thing.

There are two sides to the movement. There are those who are trying to get corporations to do the right thing to save our planet. And there are those who’ll put a gun in their hand and maybe rob a bank to fund their more violent approach. The FBI is after these people. She’s sent to go deep undercover with this group and it’s the same [question as in ‘Point Break’]: which side of the badge are you on?”

Iliff also went on to explain that the script calls for an equivalent to Swayze’s dreamy gang leader, Bodhi. The new is presented as a solo mountain climber named Cyprus, and they’ve meant to challenge Utah’s daughter at every turn.

Sadly, Iliff’s Point Break 2 script may never see the light of day. Why? Who would dare deny us what fans have been asking for time and again? Well, it’s because of the 2015 Point Break remake. That’s right, the one that no one liked.

“They made an offer to Keanu to executive produce this television series – not to star in it, just to executive produce. But Keanu’s busy. He’s just done ‘Matrix 4,’ he’s doing ‘John Wick 4’ and ‘5’ back-to-back … he’s a busy man, so we can’t get his commitment, so I can’t get Alcon [Entertainment] to do this. So I might have to retitle it something else. The title I have is ‘The Wild Side.’ I’d rename the characters, but in our hearts, we’d know it’s the continuation of the ‘Point Break’ story.”

Let’s jump back to that Point Break: Indo idea for a minute, shall we? This was a 2007 project that never got off the ground. The script involved Bodhi surviving his brush with death at the end of the original film.

You can read the official synopsis for Point Break: Indo below:

When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there he’s recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as The Bush Administration, surfing outlaws and modern-day pirates who work like “The Ex-Presidents,” a bank-robbing crew from Malibu twenty years ago.

Swayze was expected to return for the project with Jan de Bont (Twister) lined up to direct. The idea had been in the works for some time – without Reeves’ character – but it stalled out sometime in 2009. To make the situation even more tragic, Swayze had died of cancer the same year that Point Break: Indo got caught in an undertow.

What do you think of Iliff’s idea for a Point Break 2 script? Do you think it’s worth figuring out the rights situation to get the property back in proper hands? Do you think Reeves would return or at least have a cameo? Maybe a “dinner with dad” or a life-saving phone call type of situation? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments section below.
