Oscar Isaac has a fever, not because of Covid or the need for more cowbell. The always-in-demand actor says he’s finally willing to return to the Star Wars universe after a prolonged case of burnout for the franchise. Isaac played Poe Dameron in the most recent Star Wars trilogy but went on record as feeling tired of serving as a cog in the space wizard machine. However, during a SiriusXM interview, Isaac said he’s “so open” to participating in more Star Wars provided “there was a great story and a great director.”
“I don’t know. I’m open to anything. You never know,” Isaac said about slipping back into Dameron’s flight suit for another Star Wars adventure. “I have no real feeling one way or another. I’m open to any good story. Time is the one thing that becomes challenging, as you get older and kids and all that. Where do [movies] fit in? If there was a great story and a great director and [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] came to me and was like, ‘I have this great idea,’ then I’m so open to it.”
While Isaac enjoyed contributing to the latest Star Wars trilogy, he felt the burn of commitment by the end. After three films, Isaac wanted a more character-focused gig. In other words, something that would allow him to spread his wings and put his talent front and center. As incredible as it is to be a part of the Star Wars canon, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of space lasers, interstellar dogfights, and thinly-veiled political allegory.
“It’s not really what I set out to do,” Isaac said in 2020 while speaking with IndieWire. “What I set out to do was to make handmade movies, and to work with people that inspire me… It feels like for me a personal turning point and that, as far as I’m concerned, it has nothing to do with the finished product. It’s the process of doing this.”
Would you like to see Isaac return to the Star Wars franchise for more of Poe Dameron’s derring-do? Which director do you think would be suited to giving Isaac what he wants? Bryce Dallas Howard? Deborah Chow? Rick Famuyiwa? Let us know in the comments below.
