Yesterday we received the first images of Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander in J.K. Rowling's upcoming FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM. The first in what's expected to be a trilogy of films is based on a book that's barely more than 40 pages. So what in the good name of Godric Gryffindor is the story about? Well, if Warner Bros. had their way, it would have been a faux documentary on the author, Newt Scamander. Thankfully for Wizarding World fans, J.K. Rowling had a better idea and stepped in to pen the screenplay.
The synopsis as reported by Entertainment Weekly:
Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to New York with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK…when a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous, get out of their case.
There ya have it! It looks like the film will further breach the differences between you regular human and wizards/witches, as well as present an adventure for our young hero in tracking down creatures across the US landscape. Given the time in which these events take place (1920s), that should really allow for some fun set-pieces and scenery for our wizards and witches to play around in. I wonder what nods, if any, will be made to the legacy of The Boy Who Lived…
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM will open on November 18, 2016.
