Plan 9 remake wraps; director sets sights on Evil Dead The Musical and Dark Tower

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Production has officially wrapped on Darkstone Entertainment’s PLAN 9, the indie remake of Edward D. Wood Jr.’s 1969 cult classic PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. The film is written and directed by John Johnson and stars Brian Krause, Matthew Ewald, James Rolfe, Caitlin Hill, Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda. It will now enter post-production.

Just because production is complete, that doesn’t mean that Johnson is slowing down. While the flick is in post, he’s preparing to direct EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL for the stage. The show will open in October at Play On Theater in Charlottesville, VA. Auditions will be held next month. Peep the promo poster beow and keep up to date on the project on Facebook.

Johnson explains, “I, like many, have loved Sam Raimi’s work for a very long time, and had seen the play off Broadway a few years back. I grew up with a very large musical background and am kinda a sucker for a good play. I felt that Evil Dead: The Musical paid homage to what I loved in the Dead series and gave us a really nifty and new style in their adaptation. I am honored to throw my hat into the ring as a director of the play.”

He continues, “Sam and his crew have had a huge impact on me and why I want to adapt their play for new audiences. When I was a young buck of the ripe age of 15 I started making my first feature film and was lucky enough to speak with the Heads of the Evil Dead trilogy such as Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Joseph LoDuca for hours on end at times. They took a glance or two at my film and nudged me in a few different ways. I can never thank them enough for their taking the time to give a little hack like me a shot. So I hope not to let them down or their fans!”

And what’s net for Johnson on film? He is looking to create a trilogy of films inspired by the original DARK TOWER mythology on which Stephen King based his series. A website and teaser trailer are expected to launch before the year’s end. Keep an eye here for the latest!
