Update: False. From Warners: “The report in today’s London Mirror is completely inaccurate. Brad Pitt is not joining the cast of Sherlock Holmes.” Lame. This would have been pretty excellent, and I’ll still hold out some hope that Pitt shows up in the sequel.
With the disclaimer that what you’re about to hear is at this point still a rumor, UK magazine The Mirror is reporting that Guy Ritchie has called up his old pal Brad Pitt to head to London to film some scenes as Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis, Dr. Moriarty. Sayeth the source:
“It was an oversight in the film not to make a bigger deal about Moriarty. He is mentioned as Holmes’ arch enemy, but the bosses wanted Guy to make more of him. Jude Law (who plays Dr Watson) and Robert Downey Jr (Holmes) have already shot their scenes…But now that 10 extra days have been added to shoot the new ones, they may be called back for a day or two.”
The source goes on to elaborate just where all Pitt’s Moriarty scenes will be shot in London including Royal Victoria Dock, Pontoon Docks, Pinewood, Chatham Docks and at Cliveden House which is said to be where they’ve made Moriarty’s home. This kind of specificity gives you pause to think this might actually be happening.
If it is true, it’s a bit odd since it’s pretty late in the game for a seemingly major addition to the film, but it’s certainly not unheard of. Moriarty’s role will most likely be less than major (so the entire film doesn’t have to be re-shot), and I’m betting it would more than likely be paving the way for a larger part in a HOLMES sequel.
What do you think about this possibility? I’d be excited to see Ritchie and Pitt reunited, no doubt about it, but only if he can be integrated smoothly and this reworking doesn’t push the project back until March.
