Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff: Margot Robbie’s spinoff on the high seas could still be afloat

Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, Margot Robbie, Jerry Bruckheimer

Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff may not be dead in the water. Following reports of the project sinking to Davy Jones’ Locker, new comments from producer Jerry Bruckheimer indicate the film could still be afloat. According to Bruckheimer (via Collider), another Pirates script is in the works and won’t necessarily interfere with Robbie’s female-centric spinoff.

“I think that that script will come forward at a certain point,” Bruckheimer said. “We developed two different stories for ‘Pirates’ and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”

Bruckheimer did not say if the new Pirates script would include Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow, though if Depp is looking for a comeback after his ongoing courtroom drama with ex-wife Amber Heard, a new Pirates movie would be a way to go about it. Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson was in charge of the screenplay for Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff before things got quiet.

Despite conflicting reports, Robbie told Vanity Fair she assumed the Pirates project was no longer going forward. “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie told the outlet.

However, according to Bruckheimer, there’s still interest in the Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff, though it’s not “being prioritized at the moment.” Confused yet? Don’t worry. You’re not the only one.

Do you think Robbie’s Pirates spinoff will ever see the light of day? Will Disney invite Depp back to reprise his iconic role in a new movie? Where do you stand on the concept of a female-led Pirates spinoff? Please feel free to let us know in the comments.
