As the defamation trial involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continues this week, news about Depp’s biggest franchise has also emerged. Pirates of the Caribbean 6 appears to be happening but it looks like it will be without Johnny Depp and with actress, Margot Robbie.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who is a producer on the Pirates films and is currently making the rounds promoting Top Gun: Maverick as a producer, recently spoke with The Sunday Times about the future of the swashbuckling franchise, and here is what he had to say:
“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.”
When asked directly about Depp returning the franchise, Bruckheimer said:
“Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”
Depp himself said during the defamation trial that no amount of money would make him come back to play Captain Jack Sparrow because he felt betrayed by Disney after they seemed to distance themselves from him when Amber Heard first made her claims of alleged abuse from Depp public.
News of Margot Robbie starring in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie dropped in June of 2020 but since then, info has been pretty scarce. What we do know is that it will be separate from the core movies that have been released so far and it will focus on new characters and new plots. We also know that Christina Hodson, who penned Robbie’s solo Harley Quinn movie, Birds of Prey, is taking on screenwriting duties.
