Yo ho, ho! But where is the rum? And come to think of it, where is Johnny Depp? Despite some serious calls for Johnny Depp to reprise the beloved – and often sloshed – Captain Jack Sparrow for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, some are casting their doubts on that ever happening.
Vince Lozano, who played Jacoby in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl – and got an ax to the back courtesy of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner – told MovieWeb that he supports the idea of bringing back Johnny Depp for one more big screen and high seas Pirates outing but isn’t so sure it will ever actually come to fruition. “I think he deserves another shot as Jack, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, I’m hearing a lot of stories out there. The audience is there though. I do a lot of pirate conventions and there’s such a big subculture of people that dress up like pirates, and they love Johnny.”
Jack Sparrow almost immediately became Depp’s trademark character, even earning him his first Oscar nomination, leading to a three-year streak that still reads more like an apology run from the Academy (come on, the guy deserved nods for Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood at the minimum). He would win the Screen Actors Guild Award, which statistically gave him an edge at the Oscars but he ended up losing to Sean Penn for Mystic River.
While Johnny Depp had a major falling out with Disney amid abuse allegations from Amber Heard, calls from the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer began to give fans hope that the actor would walk the red carpet – as opposed to the plank – yet again. Expectedly, while some have speculated that he would indeed be open to reuniting with Disney under the right terms, no official word should be expected anytime soon.
Do you think Johnny Depp would ever return for one last Pirates of the Caribbean? If so, what sort of adventures do you want Captain Jack Sparrow to lead? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below.
