Disney will be giving Pinocchio the live-action treatment and as production will be kicking off this month in the U.K., we're starting to see the cast fill out much more. The film already stars Tom Hanks (News of the World) as Geppetto, the kindly woodcarver who creates Pinocchio, and is slated to be directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz.
It's been reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Project Power) will be lending his voice to Jiminy Cricket, companion to both Pinocchio and the Blue Fairy. Speaking of the Blue Fairy, The Wrap has reported that Cynthia Erivo (The Outsider) has signed on to play the magical being who fulfills Gepetto's wish and transforms Pinocchio into a living being. Additionally, Keegan-Michael Key (The Prom) will voice Honest John, and Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) will voice Sofia the Seagull, a new character created for the film. It was announced earlier this year that Luke Evans (The Alienist) would be playing The Coachman, the villainous figure who lures young boys to Pleasure Island where they're turned into donkeys. As for the title character, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Flora & Ulysses) will be voicing Pinocchio.
Pinocchio won't be headed to theaters however as it was announced at Disney Investor Day last year that it will instead debut on the Disney+ streaming service.
