Pikachu has tummy problems in new Pokémon: Detective Pikachu TV spot

Last year we got the first unexpectedly terrific trailer for this summer’s first live-action Pokémon movie, POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU and far too much time has gone by since we’ve seen new footage. Well, while it may not be much, a new TV spot has dropped for the delightful-looking movie showing off new looks at some Pokémon and reminding us all that Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) passes gas like the rest of us. This is why you’re not supposed to feed him after midnight.

In terms of overall plot content, there’s nothing new to see, with the early part of the spot showing previous footage from the trailer, primarily the scene where Justice Smith’s character tries to get people to talk to Pikachu, testing if he’s crazy or not. The scene we get shows off the classic “Pika Pika” we all know, which we probably won’t hear much of with Reynolds behind the voice of the electric mouse. But as for the new footage, we get a new look at some of the Pokémon we saw before, like Mr. Mime and Psyduck. If you thought these recreations from their classic animated versions looked pretty terrifying, that probably won't change now.

A movie I once scoffed at the concept of, now it's one of my most anticipated of the summer. The trailer nailed the humorous tone, effectively established the world and showcased an oddly impressive neo-noir visual style — all while looking insanely fun. Reynold's voice fits perfectly with the adorable little sleuth, which is just a cherry on top considering the sheer fluffiness of the character has guaranteed a $100+ million opening weekend. The TV spot sure held me over, but I want to see more, so hopefully, a new trailer drops soon as bigger movies start to grace the screen.

Here's the synopsis:

The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened.  Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU hits theaters May 10.
