After bursting onto the scene with Pig, Deadline has reported that Michael Sarnoski will write and direct a feature-film adaptation of Nick Drnaso’s graphic novel Sabrina.
Sabrina follows “a grieving man whose girlfriend goes missing, who goes to live with his old friend – an Air Force surveillance expert agent who is dealing with a failed marriage. After a grisly videotape is anonymously sent to news outlets, Sabrina’s disappearance goes viral. As the 24-hour news cycle and social media take hold of the story, the two men are targeted by vitriolic conspiracy theorists that threaten their sense of the truth and their faith in each other.” The graphic novel was published in May 2018 and received numerous accolades as it was included in the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of the Year, The Guardian’s Best Books of 2018, NPR’s Best Books of 2018, and more.
Before Michael Sarnoski boarded Sabrina, the project was set to be written by Drew Goddard (Bad Times at the El Royale). Goddard was also considering directing the film, but it would seem that he’s moved on to other things. Sabrina won’t be Sarnoski’s next project as he’s expected to make the spin-off to A Quiet Place next. The Quiet Place spin-off was originally slated to be helmed by Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special), but he exited the project last year. Michael Sarnoski came to the attention of John Krasinski when the Quiet Place creator found himself blown away by Pig. Krasinski met with Sarnoskiu and quickly offered him the gig. Insiders said that Sarnoski’s vision for the film was different from what Krasinski had done with the first two films, but still fit the tone of the world. The Quiet Place spinoff is currently slated for a September 22, 2023 release.
