After taking a home a much-deserved Oscar for their work on last year's SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, writer/director/producer duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller have inked a major deal with Sony Pictures TV to develop live-action comedy and drama series for the network, as well as animated works, including a "suite of TV series based on Sony’s Universe of Marvel characters, referred to as Spider-verse."
The new deal will also allow Lord and Miller to develop their own projects for network, streaming and cable platforms and is a major jump for the duo, who spent the last nine years with 20th Century Fox TV where they worked on shows like Last Man on Earth, Son of Zorn and Making History. They will remain with the network as executive producers on two upcoming animated series, Bless the Harts for Fox and Hoops for Netflix.
Not bad for a couple of guys fired from a Star Wars movie, eh? Lord and Miller are also in pre-production for LAST HUMAN, a sci-fi tale set in a future where humans have been eliminated by robots, but when one robot finds and befriends a human girl they set off on an adventure together. The script for LAST HUMAN was written by Shazam!'s Henry Gayden, based on the book by Lee Bacon. While THE LEGO MOVIE 2 wasn't exactly the hit everyone expected, Lord & Miller (who did not direct the sequel) are a very talented duo who continue to impress with the ever-expanding body of work. Here's to hoping the new Spider-Man animated shows can measure up to what SPIDER-VERSE brought to the table.
