Peyton Reed teases that Ant-Man’s suit can do new & even stranger things

Although I will continue to fantasize about the Edgar Wright version of ANT-MAN that could have been, I found Peyton Reed's take on the film to be surprisingly entertaining. ANT-MAN certainly isn't top-tier Marvel, but there was more than enough to like to keep me pumped about the upcoming sequel. Marvel Studios recently opened up the doors of their Los Angeles office and offered up a few teases from some of their upcoming projects, including ANT-MAN AND THE WASP.

Peyton Reed will soon be heading out to Atlanta to begin production on the ANT-MAN sequel, but the director was able to show off a series of storyboards and concept art for the film. Several of the images on display included a human-sized Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) holding an oversized plastic pop bottle with which spray the bad guys with as well as Luis’ (Michael Peña) van in the jaws of a dog. Peyton said that "some will end up in the movie, some won’t end up in the movie, but it’s really a way to R&D stuff before you put it to camera." Also displayed were looks at the new suits for Ant-Man as well as The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), which apparently don't look too different from what we've seen before, but will nonetheless present an evolution of Hank Pym's (Michael Douglas) technology.

After teasing that the outfits "can do even new and stranger things," Reed went on to say that Ant-Man's new suit is a mesh of what we saw in ANT-MAN and CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.

For Ant-Man specifically, in that first movie, the suit, intentionally so, is kind of a relic. It represents his past, so this is really the new iteration that is the modern version of the tech. This is a whole new suit. It's fun, because it's very specific for the needs of the story. The suits are one thing on the comic page. They are fantastic. When you actually have to make it seem realistic in the real world, in three dimensions, you've got to buy it. It's got to be credible.

Beyond using the technology to shrink and grow a variety of objects, I'm curious to discover what those "stranger things" which Reed speaks of are; perhaps a return to the Quantum realm? Also present among the concept art was an image of the original Wasp suit worn by Hope van Dyne's mother. When asked whether we might see more of Hope's mother in the sequel, Peyton Reed teased that "only time will tell."

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is set for a July 6, 2018 release.
