ANT-MAN may be in tenuous hands since the departure of Edgar Wright as writer/director, but Marvel is still confident the film will be a winner and not besmirch their stellar track record. Some may find that hard to believe with BRING IT ON director Peyton Reed calling the shots, but things still look positive.
One of the few highlights folks were looking forward to was the inclusion of vital character Janet Van Dyne (ake Wasp) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the character was not announced at Comic Con. Instead, we learned that Evangeline Lilly would play Hope Van Dyne, daughter to Michael Douglas‘ Hank Pym. But, it appears that will not be the sole female character from the comics to debut in ANT-MAN.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Peyton Reed confirmed the inclusion of Cassie Lang in the film.
“In the comics, Scott Lang has a daughter, and that’s part of the movie too, in terms of the character dynamics that are going on. That really appealed to me.”
While Lang’s actions when trying to steal the Ant-Man suit leads to his training as a hero under Pym is vital, the fact that his daughter is being introduced could add some longevity to the franchise. Cassie Lang eventually becomes Stature, a member of the Young Avengers. The inclusion of the character in ANT-MAN, likely a young child, does not guarantee she will become Stature, but it would be cool if Marvel laid the groundwork for a YOUNG AVENGERS movie down the line.
Hopefully we learn more good news about ANT-MAN soon. Production is just getting underway in anticipation of a theatrical release on July 17, 2015.
