When Peter Sarsgaard was first cast in THE BATMAN, there was speculation that he might be playing Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent, the man who would become Two-Face, but that was later proved not be the case; however, Sarsgaard will be playing a different Gotham City District Attorney, a man by the name of Gil Colson.

While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Peter Sarsgaard confirmed that the name of his character in THE BATMAN is Gil Colson, adding that he's "basically a politician that has trouble telling the truth." I know. Shocker. Sarsgaard isn't the only one in the family to have experience in the world of Gotham, as his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal played Rachel Dawes in Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT. When asked which character he thought his kids would prefer, Sarsgaard didn't think there was all that much to like in Colson. "I'm a pretty distasteful person in it," Sarsgaard said. "Daddy doesn't play nice people."

THE BATMAN stars Robert Pattinson (THE LIGHTHOUSE) as the Dark Knight, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Catwoman, Paul Dano (SWISS ARMY MAN) as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (NO TIME TO DIE) as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis (STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI) as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell (DUMBO) as Penguin, and John Turturro (The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone. We still don't know all that much about THE BATMAN at this stage, but Matt Reeves has teased that it will finally do justice to Batman's reputation of the World's Greatest Detective.

It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.

THE BATMAN is already slated for a June 25, 2021 release.
