The news had previously dropped that Pete Davidson would be headlining his own comedy series that is inspired by his life in which he will play a fictional version of himself but the show didn’t have a home…until now. Deadline is reporting that the show, officially called Bupkis, has landed a straight-to-series order at Peacock.
Davidson co-wrote the comedy series with his long-time friend and collaborator Dave Sirus as well as Judah Miller. SNL head boss Lorne Michaels serves as a producer. The show was taken to the marketplace just last month and while many platforms were interested, Peacock won the bid. Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, had this to say about the series pickup:
“Pete Davidson is one of the most sought-after comedians today with his smart, one-of-a-kind humor and honest point of view. Bupkis will showcase Pete’s funny, surprising and unfiltered brand of comedy audiences have come to love as we continue to bolster our Peacock comedy slate. We can’t wait to dive in with Lorne Michaels, Broadway Video and our partners at Universal Television.”
Bupkis is being described as “a raw, unflinching, fictionalized version of Pete Davidson’s real life. It will include a mixture of grounded storytelling with absurd elements depicting an unfiltered view through Pete’s eyes.” The show is being compared to Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and it’s said to feature unapologetically unfiltered, R-rated storytelling. The project is currently being pitched to streamers, with Prime Video and Peacock said to be the platforms that are the most interested. There is also talk of gathering A-list talent for the ensemble cast to be featured around Davidson.
This isn’t the first time that Davidson has pulled from his real life for a project. Davidson and his partner Sirus co-wrote the film The King of Staten Island with Judd Apatow. That film, which also starred Davidson, was loosely based on his life, and it scored with critics upon release. The movie is currently fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 75%.
