According to the internet, Pennywise, the demonic killer clown from Stephen King's IT, is in a committed relationship with fellow gay horror icon, The Babadook. Now, it goes without saying that before we move on, we should all vote on what their powercouple name should be. Do you like the name Babawise or Pennydook better? Personally, I'm leaning toward Pennydook.
Back in June, during Pride Month, The Babadook was declared a gay horror icon by the LGBTQ community, who'd found the character's stylish attire and sculpted pancake makeup job undeniably (and tastefully) homoerotic. In fact, Michael Varrati, who curates Comic-Con International’s yearly queer horror panel, had stated that “By internet culture standards, it’s a gay hero. The Babadook just wants to step out of the dark and into the light.” While "internet standards" doesn't really make anything official, there's no denying that the character has been welcomed with enthusiastically open arms by members of the LGBTQ community. Perhaps, with a little love and acceptance, The Babadook can come out of his cellar prison for an evening or two, and hit a club or purchase a new, fancy hat without the fear of being ridiculed.
Recently, another horror icon has been feeling the love from the LGBTQ community, and it's none other than Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King's IT. The idea of Pennywise being a member of the gay community began when fans took notice of the killer clown's Victorian-style attire, complete with massive ruffles made out of soft, delicate materials. There's also something to be said for Pennywise's love of theatrics. Much like Freddy Krueger, Pennywise has a flare for going big or going home. Furthermore, have you taken notice of the wicked way in which he applies his red, winged eyeliner? Honestly, it's no wonder that The Babadook finds him attractive.
Since the massively successful opening of Andy Muschietti's IT, countless members of the LGBTQ community have taken to social media and art outlets such as Twitter and Tumblr to declare that Pennywise and The Babadook are dating (in a fictional capacity, of course). When you stop and think about it, it makes a bit of sense. Both characters love to terrorize children, and I wouldn't put it past The Babadook to enjoy dining on human flesh. Plus, who doesn't appreciate a partner that can make them laugh, right?

I think the important thing to take away from all of this is that characters mean many things to many different people. Obviously, the notion of Pennywise dating The Babadook is an entertaining bit of fun, and, coincidentally, makes for an entertaining article to piece together on a Wednesday afternoon. I say go forth, Pennydook, and strut!
Andy Muschietti's IT is in theaters now.
