Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem face the past in Everybody Knows trailer

Director Asghar Farhadi made a strong name for himself after winning two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film for the movies A SEPARATION and THE SALESMAN, and after the latter was released two years ago he’s back with the dramatic thriller EVERYBODY KNOWS (TODOS LO SABEN in Spanish) starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. The movie was acquired by Focus Features out of Cannes and it screened at TIFF in September, and now you can watch the trailer for the movie that finds Cruz going through her worst nightmare after her daughter was kidnapped when visiting family in Spain.

The movie premiered at TIFF to some mostly positive reviews, although most critics seem to be in agreeance that the movie is not as strong as Farhadi’s past efforts. Still, praise has been showered on the main cast, especially Cruz, and fans of taut thrillers with fine performances should find something to admire in this feature starring two incredible actors.

Here’s the plot synopsis:

Laura (Penélope Cruz) and her children travel from Buenos Aires to the village where she was born, on a Spanish vineyard, to attend her sister’s wedding, but unexpected events lead this gathering toward a crisis that exposes the family’s hidden past.
