SHAUN OF THE DEAD remains a horror-comedy classic even after all these years, launching Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost into the spotlight. The movie is the first in the beloved the Cornetto Trilogy (followed by HOT FUZZ and THE WORLD’S END), but despite rumors Pegg and Wright were thinking of doing a direct sequel, they’ve recently come out an said the two were just kidding around. We should've guessed this given their penchant for, you know, comedy.
Wright and Pegg both spoke with EW recently and brought up doing a sequel of sorts to SHAUN OF THE DEAD, called FROM DUSK TILL SHAUN, that would involve vampires instead of zombies. But even though Pegg wrote out a treatment, it was all just for a laugh:
I jokingly wrote a treatment for From Dusk Till Shaun, which was a sequel to Shaun of the Dead. It was all about Shaun and Ed having to go up to Edinburgh, or something. I don’t know. It was ridiculous. And it was a joke. It wasn’t like a serious pitch. Edgar thought it would be funny to do the film again, but with vampires. But it was all just pub talk.
Wright said they playfully toyed with the idea for a good 72 hours and thought it could be an “alternate reality sequel” wherein “It basically starts with the same movie but then it becomes not about zombies.” But they soon realized that if they’re going to put that much time into something it should be something different, and on that front Wright is very seriously thinking of working with Pegg and Frost again:
I actually was texting with Simon today, in fact. If we did something else, I think it would be something new, that’s not part of the existing kind of trilogy. It’s really about writing something that we want to do, rather than it seeming like we ought to do something, do you know what I mean? The three movies we made all come from different points of passion. It’s finding what that is and again chaining ourselves to the office to write it. [Laughs] But I would like to work with them again, of course. They’re best friends as well as collaborators.
A few months ago it was announced that Pegg and Frost would be starting their own production company together, Stolen Picture, and would be working on the movie SLAUGHTERHOUSE RULEZ together. Wright has also been busy with his new movie, BABY DRIVER, which earned him the best reviews and box office total of his directing career. Perhaps with all this success, the trio may want to get back to basics on a project together.
Obviously, I would watch an “alternate reality” sequel to SHAUN because it has no reason to not be amazing. Frankly, I would watch anything these three do together, so if Wright and Pegg can crank out another idea I beg them to bring it to life. I'm sure they have plenty of ideas kicking about, whether they are based on genre fare or what have you. Okay, now all I want is FROM DUSK TILL SHAUN.
