We’ve been hearing bits and pieces about Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s PAUL for a while now, mainly that it’s about a pair of geeks who meet an alien who sounds suspiciously like Seth Rogen.
But now Universal has at long last released an official plot summary, and with it comes a few more details about what we can expect from the film.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen ) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-travelling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Collings (Frost). Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.
Something bothers me about the phrase “space-travelling smart ass,” but since its Pegg and Frost I have to believe that this is going to be great. The only missing piece here is director Edgar Wright, replaced by SUPERBAD’s Greg Mottola, who is hopefully up to the task.
The film is so stacked with talent, it almost seems to good to be true. In addition to Pegg, Frost and Rogen there’s Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, and Jeffrey Tambor. But what’s that about too many cooks? I guess we’ll see, but I think think it’s a safe bet to believe this will live up to expectations.
