The 1997 sci-fi horror film Event Horizon (watch it HERE) may not have been one of director Paul W.S. Anderson’s more financially successful projects, but it does seem to be one of his most popular and respected movies. Possibly the most highly respected of the bunch. A lot of the films he has made since have had horror elements – the Resident Evil films, Alien vs. Predator – but none have been as dark as Event Horizon. And Anderson told Variety that he’s interested in getting back to “full-on horror” territory.
Speaking with Anderson to mark the 25th anniversary of Event Horizon, Variety asked him if he would want to make “another full-bodied horror film like Event Horizon“. He responded,
Absolutely I would. I’m actually planning to do a kind of straight horror movie in the near future. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. My career has gone more in an action direction, but it’s always been kind of scary action. I’ve always tried for some great jumps, even in the PG-13 movies I’ve made. But I would like to embrace doing a more full-on horror movie, absolutely — one that works more on a psychological level, a return to what Event Horizon was.
Before he gets around to making this full-on, psychological horror movie, Anderson will be directing the George R.R. Martin adaptation In the Lost Lands. A film that will star his wife Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) – and yes, will have at least one scene of those two fighting each other.
Event Horizon is definitely my favorite Paul W.S. Anderson movie, so I’m glad to hear that he’s interested in making something else along the same lines. I have been underwhelmed by his work more often than I’ve been impressed by it, but I would gladly watch another serious Anderson horror movie.
