Director Paul Verhoeven is back with a steamy period drama called, Benedetta, and in the first trailer dropped by Pathé, the Basic Instinct helmer seems right at home embracing familiar cinematic territory.
Originally titled Blessed Virgin, Benedetta is inspired by true events and is set in the late 15th century as a plague is ravaging the land. Benedetta Carlini, played by Virginie Efira, joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a novice who has been capable from an early age of performing miracles. It becomes clear early on that her impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous. The film also stars Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia, Lambert Wilson and Olivier Rabourdin.
Based on the book "Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy" by historian Judith C Brown, Benedetta has been confirmed as an official selection at this year's Cannes Film Festival and is set to screen in competition during the event which is scheduled to run July 6-17. Verhoeven is marking his return to the Croisette with this film after 2016's Elle reinvigorated his career. David Birke, who co-wrote Elle, reteamed with Verhoeven on this project, and with its mix of controversy, religion, and erotica, this puts the director in a very familiar lane since he has never really been shy about touching on controversial topics in his films.
