Paul Thomas Anderson, Thom Yorke team for musical one-reeler, Anima

If you woke up this morning regretting the lack of short musical films from Paul Thomas Anderson and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, then today is the day your woes come to an end. Netflix announced this morning that PTA and Yorke have collaborated on the upcoming one-reeler short, ANIMA, and that the streaming service will be releasing it one week from today with special sneak peeks in IMAX on Wednesday, June 26.

Few details were given about the project, and the teaser that was dropped along with it doesn’t help that much either, playing Yorke’s music over the definition of a one-reeler and then a visual of the musician peeking out and staring at the camera. While that may not seem like a lot, that is, in fact, more than enough to get myself and likely many, many others intrigued about what the hell this thing will be.

Anderson is no stranger to the Radiohead family, often teaming with member Jonny Greenwood for his scores on movies like THERE WILL BE BLOOD, THE MASTER, INHERENT VICE and PHANTOM THREAD (earning an Oscar nomination), some of those being the best movie scores of the 21st Century. As for Yorke, the short will be released on the same day as the digital drop for his new album of the same name, Anima, which you can check out some pre-order info for here for when the physical album arrives July 19.

Not only does this sound like an interesting project for Yorke and Anderson, but it's yet another example of Netflix getting into more experimental territory in the music realm. Not too long ago they released the visual album THE BASH BROTHERS EXPERIENCE from The Lonely Island to much acclaim. While ANIMA doesn't seem like it will be as long, it certainly seems like an interesting project, and the stills alone tease a stunning visual aesthetic. I don't know if you'll have ten free minutes next week, but this could be a cool way to spend them.
