Ghostbusters fans should prepare to be triggered by the following story because I know it’s about to make you feel some type of way after hearing it. Sony Pictures is releasing a Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection gift set that is coming fresh off the success of Jason Reitman’s recent film sequel but one film is going to be missing from that definitive box set. Paul Feig’s 2016 female-centric Ghostbusters reboot will not be included in Sony’s set and the director is blasting the studio for its omission.
Feig took to Twitter when he saw that, in honor of the February 1, 2022, home release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sony is releasing an eight-disc Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on the same day. The set includes 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II, along with Reitman’s 2021 film, which served as a direct sequel to the 1984 film. Missing from this set is Feig’s 2016 film which starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mckinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. Feig did share his thoughts on social media while also pointing out that the original film’s stars, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Ernie Hudson, also appear in his movie. You can check out Feig’s Twitter post below:
Here’s the interesting thing about Paul Feig’s polarizing Ghostbusters film in hindsight. The movie received better critical reviews than Reitman’s fan service sequel (74% fresh versus 62% fresh) and time has been kinder to the film since its 2016 release when it became the target of misogynistic trolling on YouTube and social media before a single frame of film was seen by the public. There is no denying that the film lost money due to its sprawling budget compared to what it ultimately grossed but Ghostbusters’ fans were brutal as soon as the movie was announced and it just never stood a chance. Sony Pictures not including it in the set makes sense because the three films included are connected within the franchise narrative but excluding it only adds to the notion that the trolls were right and the movie is garbage. Again, that’s just my personal opinion and I know the comments on this will be hot so I’m going to just sit back with a bowl of popcorn and take them in.
